In the beginning...

Just say Jesus

9-29-2015 Genesis 1:29-31

29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

In these couple of verses God tells us how he has given us everything we need.  It’s a funny thing…needs and wants.  People (including myself) tend to get this mixed up.  Mankind sure has.  Our world is full of people pursuing wealth, power, and notoriety.  I did this for many years thinking this would bring me happiness or joy.  I had everything the world has to offer and it left me feeling empty and unfulfilled.  Why?  Without a connection to my Creator, it is was meaningless.   The Bible speaks of a thirst that we all have.  That thirst is a desire to know…. Who am I? Why am I here? What will happen when I die?  Jesus tells us that “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst (John 6:35).  Also in John 7:37 Jesus cried out saying “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink”.   That thirst we all have can only be satisfied through a relationship with Jesus.  By following Jesus my life is full of meaning.  My innermost desires can be fulfilled.  As Paul the Apostle wrote: I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).  Jesus didn’t give us a rule book.  He said “Follow me”. It is the best decision I have ever made.  I encourage all that read this to follow as I have.  He will quench your ‘thirst’.……

9-24-2015 Genesis 1:26-28

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Just think… I am made in God’s image.  Wow!!! It doesn’t get much better than that.  But at the same time I wonder why?  What is my purpose?  Why am I here?  I think every man or woman ponders these questions.  I was basically taught (or shown) that I needed to get an education, work hard, provide for my family, be a good husband and father, etc, etc, etc..  All these are good things but Why?  What happens when I die? Is this all there is? I can give you all the scientific answers about proof of a Creator, or our universe being finite, or how quantum physics shows we live in a digital world (The Matrix). But these are all things man through our limited abilities has discovered.  And not only that but tomorrow science will come up with some new discovery.  The Bible tells us that wisdom to man is foolishness to God.  Now that makes sense, because there is no bigger fool than me.  So it comes down to a matter of faith.  Today I put my faith in God.  He has a plan and a purpose for my life (Jeremiah 29:11).  The more I study the Bible and follow Jesus the more I understand why I am here.  Jesus tells us “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29).  When I was at my lowest, I came to Jesus and he gave me the peace and rest that I needed, as well as my purpose.  As the song “Amazing Grace” states “for I was lost and now I’m found”.  Thank you Jesus…..

9-23-2015 Genesis 1:24-25

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

After reading these verses I can’t help but see that everything God makes is good.  All the creatures of this earth, beasts, things that creeps.  It’s all good.  Sometimes when I see things crawling on the ground or flying around my head , I think why would God make such an annoying creature.  I’ll try to swat it away, or step on it and crush it.  It doesn’t make sense.  How can it be good?  The truth is I don’t understand it’s purpose.  When I find out the reason for it’s existence, I learn that it is good.  All the creatures keep our world in balance.  The same goes for us.  When we understand our purpose, we can then find the good in us…or others.  So many times I have judged others, made degrading remarks or just dismissed them.  Why?  Well I think because I don’t understand their purpose.  Paul wrote: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).  Since all things work together for good, I need to find the good in others.  We tend to focus on negative things and so easily forget about the good things.  So many times I have criticized, or complained about someone instead of finding the good.  So today I will try and find the good in everyone I see.  Showing them kindness, compassion, and love will ultimately bring out the Good.   You know good is God with an extra ‘o’… just sayin.

9-22-2015 Genesis 1:20-23

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

I emphasized two words here… “abundance” and “fruitful”.  God has given me an abundance of resources and/or gifts throughout my life.  I haven’t always made the most of these, however God seems to have an “abundance” of blessings for me.  It’s funny how we get caught up in all the things of this world, especially things we don’t have.  Jesus told us to not worry about any of these things.  He told us to look at the birds….they get fed ….so stop stressing (Matthew 6:25-27). The next word “fruitful” to me is how we use the abundance that God has given us.  I have spent many years using the gifts God has given me for my benefit.  I squandered many relationships and opportunities.  However, I was made to bear fruit.  Look at a grows from a seed, blossoms, and bears fruit.  The fruit is for others to consume.  The tree just supplies the fruit.  That’s our job… to bear fruit.  Jesus told us “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15).  Today I will try to bear good fruit.  A kind word, a listening ear, or just a smile.  Paul the apostle wrote “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). The love I share today will have a lasting effect.  It will always bring forth and abundance of fruit.

9-17-2015 Genesis 1:14-18

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.

God is always giving us signs to guide us.  For most of my life I have missed those signs.  They came from my parents, friends, teachers, co-workers, and passers-by.  I have come to notice that God is always speaking to me.  Not audibly…I don’t hear voices, but through other people or events in my life.  When I see someone acting inappropriately to another or to myself I recognize the lesson God is showing me.  I can here it just like a father would say “See that… that’s how you would act”.  Then I get a real perspective of where I am and who I was.  Today I try to be the light for someone else to see.  If I can only help one person, I have made a difference.  It’s the ripple effect like tossing a pebble into a still pond.  What we do today has lasting effect on the whole world moving forward.  As God separated the light from the darkness we also must separate ourselves from those dark places.  Just for today I will try to be a light for someone ….

9-16-2015 Genesis 1:9-12

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

God’s perfect plan is revealed again as we read these four verses.  In his infinite wisdom all things were prepared ahead of time for man to prosper.  Dry land for man to build upon, inhabit, and harvest.  The sea’s to provide fish, and trees for fruit.  This was to be the foundation for life.  Jesus tells us to build your house on the Rock (Matthew 7:24-27).   So many times in my life when the storms came, my house would fall because my foundation was weak.  Putting my trust in Jesus strengthens and reinforces my foundation.  Today when the struggles of life (the storms)  I rely on Jesus to guide my path.  Just as Peter got out of the boat (Matthew 14:29-32) I too must follow the command of Jesus.  Sometimes I may take my eyes off of Jesus and start to fall.  But when I cry out “Jesus save me!”  as Peter did, He stretches out his hand to save me.  God’s perfect plan built a foundation for my life.  All I have to do is submit to His will.

9-15-2015 Genesis 1:6-8

6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

The first three words just jump off the page.  “Then God said”.  All God needs to do is speak and it is done.  Most of us speak without even thinking. I know I do.  We gossip and slander one another.  The Bible tells us: Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death.  With that same tongue we bless the Lord and curse people who are made in the likeness of God.  I confess this has been me for most of my life.  Jesus told us that on the day of judgement we will give an account for every careless word (Matthew 12:36).  I guess I will have some explaining to do.  Our words can lift up or tear down each other.  Our words reveal our heart.  Just for today, I will try to encourage others.  To me that encouraging word is “Jesus”.  He is our joy and strength.  He brings us the message of hope, and more important, he is “Love”.  Love someone today.  All it takes is a kind word….

9-14-2015 Genesis 1:2-5

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was[a] on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

I have been through many years of living in darkness.  During this time I was definitely without form and void. However, God was always looking after me.  When I saw the light, it divided the light from darkness so I could see clearly the path.  That path is to follow God’s will for my life.  Jesus is called the light of the world and I am to be conformed to his image (Romans 8:29).  If I can keep Jesus first and stay away from the dark places, I can live reasonably happy today, and I look forward to living supremely happy with Him forever.

Creation (1)

The History of Creation

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

What a humbling statement!  Since we are all creative beings we can rationalize how our creation could never understand the creator. Thus our understanding of who “God” is, will always be limited to the amount of information he decides to reveal to us. Science reveals to us through the Laws of Thermodynamics that there has to be a creator.  One needs only to look at man’s creations, and then observe the beauty of God’s creation.  (Romans 1:20) For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen. We are God’s greatest work.  We are made in his image (Genesis 1:27) and we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
